Exhibition -  About Mjøsa

by Xia Hua

22 Nov – 23 Dec 2025

  • The Series ABOUT MJØSA 2025–2026

Mjøsa – identity – landscape – farm life

The Chinese-Norwegian artist Xia Hua opens a new sales exhibition where Mjøsa and farm life in Gjøvik are central. The new painting series, "ABOUT MJØSA", represents a new focus in the artist’s practice, inspired by life in Gjøvik. This series explores themes around a new environmentally focused lifestyle on a farm, presents both oil paintings, acrylics and watercolours, and offers a precise insight into how nature, culture and personal identity merge. For the artist, Mjøsa is more than a landscape. The large lake becomes a symbol of roots, belonging and continuous change. Impressions from the Norwegian landscape are combined with a background in Eastern art traditions. The oil paintings carry traces of classical Western technique, while the watercolours have a lightness and precision reminiscent of Asian brushwork. The interplay gives the exhibition a unique expression – a cultural dialogue between two art worlds.

Mjøsa as motif and reflection

The artworks are inspired by farm life in Gjøvik. The transparent layers give the motifs an airy quality and function as visual notes from a place that has become significant for the artist’s own self-understanding.

In the artworks, the artist examines Mjøsa’s shifting expressions. Surfaces, light and depths are used as metaphors for questions of identity, belonging and grounding. The lake’s calm and unpredictability mirror the artist’s own reflections on living between several cultures.
